Walking Tour of Downtown Lofts

If you have ever wondered what is behind the fantastic front facades of some of the gorgeous 1890s buildings in historic Downtown Wilmington, join the “Artsy Spaces in Lofty Places” walking tour, sponsored by Main Street Wilmington, and assisted by both the Wilmington Community Arts Collaborative and On the Move.

Several building owners have opened up their unique spaces for the public to stroll through their upper lofts.  Some spaces have been fully renovated. Some spaces are in extreme disrepair. Some are for rent. And some are for sale. Yet all portray exciting architecture of days past.

The Wilmington Community Arts Collaborative (WCAC) is a group of artists and patrons dedicated to improving the quality of life through the creation and promotion of fine art in Wilmington. And as an awesome bonus, members of the WCAC will be exhibiting some of their creative works in several of the lofts. Those local talented artists being represented are: MaryBeth Thorngren, Sophia Burgess, Sue Lamke, Chip Donaldson, Krista Droop, Susan Hunt, Maggie Vance, Dr. Stella Ling, Elaine Balsley, Debbie Hook, John Schum, Sandy Schum, Steve Holland, and Hal Shunk. (The WCAC is currently accepting new members. Please contact John Schum at the South Street Gallery for more details.)

There are two types of tickets that will be offered for the Loft Tour. Both tickets are currently for sale as follows (CASH or check only please):

The $10 “Tour-only” tickets may be purchased at South Street Gallery, 39 N. South Street.

The $30 “Tour+Dinner tickets may be purchased at the General Denver Hotel, 81 W. Main Street. (The price includes the tour, a delicious 3-course meal, tax, and gratuity. Alcoholic beverages are extra.)

Please walk with us to see a private area of Downtown that you probably won’t see offered again, and help us to support our local artists!  (The many stairways are steep, some are uneven, and most of the spaces are located on upper floors, so please wear comfortable, safe, walking shoes. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking and climbing stairs, due to the lack of accessibility in these old buildings.)

Special thanks to Christine Krisa (Event Organizer), Steve Brown (Executive Director, MSW) Jennifer Purkey (Chairman Promotions Committee, MSW), John Schum (WCAC), Theresa Rembert (On The Move), Architect Parker Hoar, the generous loft owners, our very talented local artists, and all of the wonderful volunteers who are helping to make this an exciting event.
